Visuals for Self Regulation

Image
Visuals for Self Regulation One of my high school teachers for students with autism has tons of visuals all around her room, to help students identify and communicate their internal states and needs: Teachers Pay Teachers  is the place to go for visuals!  Bin also contains some favorite fidgets and visual toys. And, lots of cool activities and environmental aids for self regulation: Mulch-ish dirt--very little scent. Water table on wheels Softest sand you ever felt.

Sensory-based and Ergonomic Experiences

OT Tools for Public Schools Welcome to a spot to share ideas for working with students in exceptional education in public schools. Please describe activities you've successfully used with students to improve fine motor and self-help skills. Creative classroom adaptations for sensory-based and ergonomic needs are sought. Technology applications, low and high tech, are appreciated. Above all--be positive and professional in sharing your experiences and ideas. Thanks. Thursday, June 1, 2017 On the Hunt for Rocks Well, I can't show you the faces or even a clear view of the students walking away on the trail, but it was a warm yet dry day here in Central Virginia and everyone enjoyed walking on the paved path of a local park, looking for rocks left by previous walkers and for good spots to place their own painted rocks. OT Tools for Public Schools Weighted Pencil How To  Some students benefit from using a weighted pencil, all of the writing time or sometimes.  The extra weight gives a little extra proprioceptive input that alerts the student to the fact that s/he is holding something and gives them a bit extra information about where the pencil is, in their hand.  Where did I buy those gummy grips???  Big Lots, of course!  Where did I get the right-size nuts for adding weight???  My shed, of course! This photo would be better if the student's forearm was resting on the table surface, but the grip itself looks better than the grip he normally uses without the weighted pencil. Be sure to use the student's favorite color gummy grip on the "lead" end of the pencil.  That way he'll be motivated to grasp that color with his thumb and first two fingers.

Ideas for Proprioceptive Activities

http://sensory-processing.middletownautism.com/sensory-strategies/strategies-according-to-sense/proprioceptive/ Proprioceptive Print The proprioceptive system is located in our muscles and joints. It provides us with a sense of body awareness and detects/controls force and pressure. The proprioceptive system also has an important regulatory role in sensory processing as proprioceptive input can assist in controlling responses to sensory stimuli. Proprioceptive input can be very calming for those who are easily overwhelmed by sensory stimulation. Proprioceptive input can be alerting for those who need increased sensory stimulation to facilitate attention and learning. Many students with autism seek proprioceptive input in order to regulate their emotional and behavioural responses to sensory stimulation. It should be noted, however, that some students may be overresponsive to proprioceptive input and will therefore avoid the activities listed below.  It is impor...
